Between vegetarian, vegan or meat eater I do not believe one is more ethical then the other. I believe we should treat all of our food well. I see ripping a tomato plant out of the earth instead of leaving it in the ground to bare more fruit just as unethical as miss treating an animal.
We need to take more care in how we grow and harvest our food. I once read an article on a Aboriginal page about buying tobacco, sage and sweet grass at the store. They cautioned people against buying it from a place like this because it was almost always ripped from the earth by the roots. They compared it to ripping the hair from someone’s head. They talked about sustainable harvesting. How they take great care in leaving the plant so that it may grow back as well as taking time to thank the Earth for allowing them to harvest from it.
I know this is impossible from corporate perspective that feeds the masses but it is something good to consider in the ethics of food debate. I would like to see all of my food treated well whether it has legs or roots.
