A Wandering Soul

Some artists know they need their soul to create so they sell their sanity instead. -Connie B.

Tiny Forest Project

My husband is always fascinated by the idea of a tiny forest. While I was out doing yard work I noticed several of these tiny juniper saplings and lots of moss so I decided to try and make him a tiny forest for his office. He put a piece of Leland Slag glass he found when we went on vacation in Michigan several years ago.

I have had this little glass terrarium for as long as I can remember. Found it in a garage sale or something a long time ago. The pots are recycled  and the aqua planter is from Gethsemane Garden Center in Andersonville, Chicago.

Its a nice little collection of memories and a tiny little forest for him to look at.

I have been going through a tough time. Family tragedies have left me struggling to stay upbeat but today helped a little. I bought myself three baby cacti. I put them in glasses made from recycled wine bottles and set them on my desk. They make me very happy.

My rainy day candle recycling project. I put three wicks in there because I don’t have super thick ones and beeswax melts different then soy.

I just got my new jars for candles. They are 100% recycled and are totally usable for drinking glasses after the candle has been spent and they have been washed out. They are 19oz and really beautiful. I am really excited.

Buy Hand Made Buy Eco Friendly

If you are like me you have been slapped in the face finding out that all of the traditional brands have hidden chemicals in them that cause illness later in life. You know people your age who have cancer and have read about people like Steve Jobs. It is outrages how prevalent these illnesses caused by unknown agents are.

For too long we have been in the dark about what we are eating, drinking and breathing in. I have gone from a small child drinking ectoplasm colored drinks to worrying about if my water is pure enough.

This lead to the creation of these all natural candles. You know exactly what went into them because I spent months “reading the back of the box”.

Nothing toxic here but they are not just a luxury. In this day in age we are in a energy crisis and things like brown outs and power outages from large unexpected storms leaves us scrambling to find that old candle in the basement. Who knows what is in that candle. The hemp wicks in mine burn bright and white. Perfect for power outages. We burned all three sizes of the clear libby jars and found the 8 oz lasts 26 hours, the 12 oz lasts 32 hours and the 21 oz lasts 75 hours!! This is very good ensuring it will be there for your when you need it.

Not only is it practical but also beautiful. I can add a custom piece of art to the side of the candle hand cut in quality vellum. They are the perfect gift. You don’t want to give your best friend or loved one a candle with secretly hidden toxic materials. Give them something quality and practical.

Are Wood Wicks A Good Alternative?

Candles are very populer these days but you could be paying to put harmful chemicals in the air that can cause major illness later or even affect your mood.

For a long time I was paying tons of money for candles advertised as all natural. They had “organic” wood wicks with natural soy wax. The problem lay with what was done with the wick and the wax after. The natural soy wax had synthetic fragrances added to it. Most fragrances are created with petroleum based chemicals that are harmful to you. The wood wicks were treated with a “clean burning” agent that when I went to research what this meant was not given any answers by any of the companies that created them.

Because I could not get any answers I did a test. I made candles with wood wicks both treated and untreated as well as candles with organic hemp wicks. When burned the untreated wood wicks did not stay lit and created black smoke emissions that is not great for breathing in. The wooden wicks that were treated had less smoke emissions and had a clove like synthetic smell to them. They did seem like a good alternative until I saw the wax. The wax had been changed to a brownish color. I did not realize this was caused by the treated wood wicks until I burned the all natural hemp core wicks. These wicks burned much brighter then any of the other wicks used previously. They had little smoke as long as you kept them trimmed to a nice short length. The soy wax was crystal clear as well showing no chemicals were being released from the wick.

I realized from all of this experimentation that I had to create candles that payed attention to every last material put into them. Just one material can set back all efforts made to be environmentally thoughtful as well as healthy. I use organic or naturally harvested fair trade essential oils, eco friendly pesticide free soy wax, organic hemp wicks and both 100% recycled glass containers and some with 30% recycled glass that I have placed hand cut vellum luminary designs around.

I would like to thank http://peacefulhealingjourney.com in helping me with my education on the pitfalls of synthetic materials in candle making. I think it is important to pay attention to everything that goes into your body and I am trying to put more options out there for people who really care about what they consume.
